LECTURES
Week 5 — Composition
- Its how you arrange the elements in your design/frame.
- Best way to arrange it is by arranging it with meaning
- Focus should stand out more

Basic composition rules
- Visual narrative (feel of the scene)
- Visual flow (path of the viewer's eye)
- Visual balance (nudge the eye of the viewer in a certain direction)
- Visual hierarchy (the way to visualize and make the subject the focus)

Different types of composition shots
- Establishing shot : Establish setting and portray a spectacle
- Bird's eye view : Overhead shots, 90 degree angle above the ground
- Frame within a frame : add depth and create visual interest
- Medium shot : 3 quarters shot
- Close up : able to catch emotions which also provides an intimate look into the character's mind
- Worm's eye view : close to ground and is used to emphasize emotions

Foreground (nearest to viewer)
Middle ground (in between)
Background (furthest from the viewer)

INSTRUCTIONS

TASK

For this project, we are instructed to create a triptych which is an artwork that is divided into 3 sections that are hinged together and can be folded shut or displayed open. We are to create 3 illustrations to depict a scenery of a story based on one of the themes (cultural celebration or renewal of life) using Adobe Illustrator.

I decided to base off my design on a Thailand series Thailand series I watched called 'Until We Meet Again' which features a story about 2 college students who discover that they are reincarnated souls of 2 past lovers who had committed suicide in their past lives. They are bound and destined to meet again in their next life due to the symbolism of the red thread.

1. Sketch Idea
Fig 1.1 Sketch

I started off my sketch within 3 panels, the first one featuring the past life, the middle showing their hands reaching out for each other as they fall out of touch and the third panel features the couple meeting again but with a bouquet of flowers to represent their undying love for one another and how it blooms, emphasizing a sense of renewal in life. The red thread would portray a connection within all the 3 panels to form a sense of storytelling from the left to the right pannel, to guide the viewer's eye.

2. Digitisation

Fig 2.1 Progress for first draft

I started the digitisation process according to the feedback given. Pen tool was used for all the shapes above. I decided to make it grayscale as I wanted to focus on the design and the layout first then work on the colours afterwards.

The hole in the head and the heart reveals the story of how the couple died, a shot to the head for the male and a shot to the heart for the female.

The colours used as a representation for their genders are blue and pink which symbolize their respective genders.

FEEDBACK
Week 3 — First attempt according to the sketch might be too detailed and unachievable in Illustrator thus maintaining simplicity by making the design simpler should be done. A close up for the third panel would be preferable to avoid complexity.

REFLECTION
I enjoyed doing this design as it was based on one of my favourite romance series and it is also one of the first competitions we had to do in design. It was a really fun project and even though it might be time consuming and a struggle at one point due to not being used to using the tools such as the pen tool, it was still fun exploring various tools to use from to create a vibrant but simple design.
