Project 2B — Photo Manipulation

INSTRUCTIONS

Compose one creative image by combining two different objects.

LECTURES
Exposure : The amount of light which reaches your camera sensor or film.

Main parts of the camera
1. Camera body :
- Shutter
- Image sensor
- LCD screen
2. Camera lens :
- Aperture / Iris

Fig 1.1 Exposure settings and camera parts

2 camera settings that affect the luminous exposure of an image :
- Shutter speed
- Aperture
- ISO (affects brightness of your photos)

Iris / Aperture : control of the flow of light entering the lens
- measured by f-stop; the lower the f-number, the larger the lens opening.
Shutter : small plastic sheet that opens and closes to allow light onto the film or prevent light from reaching the film
- shutter speed is measured in seconds

Fig 1.2 Shutter speed examples

ISO : referred to the sensitivity of the film(light gathering ability); refers to the signal gain of the camera's sensor
- the lower the number of ISO the less sensitive your camera is to light and the finer the grain.

Fig 1.3 Aperture settings

Lens Perspective : wide angle lens, standard lens, tele lens; different lenses are designed for different purposes. lenses can be categorized by focal length.

Fig 1.4 Types of camera lens

Focal Length : the shorter the focal length, the wider the angle of view and vice-versa. it is the measurement from optical center of a camera lens to the camera's sensor.
Depth of field : proportion of image that is reasonably sharp and in focus.
Wide angle lens : useful for landscape photography or street photography.
Standard lens : accurate presentation of what the human eye sees both in terms of visual angle and perspective
Tele lens : great for isolating a subject that is far away

DSLR vs SMARTPHONE
Pro
- Familiar with device
- Good quality
- Easy to learn
Cons
- Still limited
- Good but not great
- Non-ergonomic shape

2. Idea Exploration
I found some berries on some trees as I was walking past the lakeside so I decided to take some pictures.

3. Process

Fig 3.1 Sketch Idea

My idea was to edit some of the berries into eyeballs by adding the pupil of a plastic toy eyeball and edit in some veins to make it look more realistic.

Fig 3.2 Process of Editing on Photoshop

I added the pupils onto some of the berries and for the ones facing different directions, I used the perspective tool to skew it according to the direction of where the berry is facing.

Fig 3.3 Process of Editing on Photoshop

After adding the pupils, I edited veins and a bit of shading and shadows in by using the brush tool and the pen tool then lowered the opacity.

FEEDBACK

Week 9 — The photo manipulation is fine and there were no specific remarks given to change the edit. Only the image is needed to be cropped.
