LECTURE

Week 4 — Introduction to Film Sound

Sound elements
Mixing of sound elements below creates an audio setting that supports the action and engages the spectators.
1. Speech
  • Speech is one of the most important tools for understanding the story of the film.
  • Dialogue is the conversation between characters in a movie
2. Sound effects
  • Ambience audio refers to the background noise present at a given scene/location
  • Hard/cut effects : almost every sound we hear at the movies isn't dialogue or music, its a sound effect
3. Music in movie
  • Music in movie is to enhance the dramatic narrative and emotional impact.
  • Dubbing (ADR) : process of re-recording dialogue after the filming process to improve audio quality or reflect dialogue changes
  • Foley : sound effects technique for synchronous effects or live effects.
    • Foley technique are named for Jack Foley, a sound editor at Universal Studios

TASKS
Part 1 — Audio Dubbing
In this task we were tasked to add audio and sound effects to a muted clip from the movie Munich (2005) which includes the background ambience, dialogue and the necessary sound effects. To do so, we had to record our voices and adjust the audio of the voice to the right pitch, as well as look for the rest of the audio on another website.

The first step was to review the clip and I made the spreadsheet to take note of all the sound effects and the timestamps of the video.

Me and a couple of other friends then recorded several dialogues on our phone and imported them on Premier Pro.

Certain audio clips had to be layered over each other to achieve the desired sound effects or the accurate sound effects that were present according to the time stamps.

I also used the effects control panel to adjust the volume for some of the audios according to its distance from the camera's POV.

There was one scene where the actors were on the phone so I edited the audio on premier pro to make it sound as if they were in a phone call.

Part 2 — Audio Shaping
For this task, we are instructed to do sound shaping in Adobe Audition by following a step-by-step workflow. We were tasked to shape 4 different sounds based on the provided audio;
1. Voice of a phone call
2. Voice coming from inside the closet
3. Voice from a toilet/bathroom
4. Voice from an underground cave

Progress :
Once I've followed the step-by-step tutorial provided, I tried to explore some of the filters and effects by setting them at different decibels to achieve the desired sound.

REFLECTION

These exercises allowed me to learn and explore more of the aspects and tools around Premier Pro and Adobe Audition and also learnt how to add sound effects accordingly based off a scene from a trailer. Learning on how the sound production works behind a movie was interesting, especially having to record some of the audios with friends was also a pretty fun exercise to do.
