Critical Review

TASKS

Since it was my first time writing a critical review, I needed a bit of an idea of how to write my critical review.

Some questions to ask when starting to write a critical review:

- What is the main area under review discussion?
- Where does the writer's data and evidence come from?
- What are the main issues raised by the writer?
- What are the major interpretations made by the author in terms of issues raised?
- Is the text balanced? fair? biased?
- How well does all this relate to the other literature on the topic? your own experience?
- How can you summarize all of the above points?

Context of a Critical Review:

Introduction

  • opening sentences that state the writer, title
  • give brief explanation of the topic of the text
  • aim of the text
  • summary of findings
  • key arguments presented
  • brief statement of evaluation of text
Summary
  • summary of main points of article
  • few examples
  • writer's purpose
  • organization of text
  • shouldn't be longer than one third of the whole
Main Body
  • discuss, evaluate strengths, weaknesses, important features of the text
  • based on specific criteria and include other sources to support it (with references)

Conclusion
  • concludes review with restatement of overall opinion of the text
  • include recommendation and some further explanation of judgement to show that it is fair and reasonable

The articles were chosen and before writing the critical review, articles were read and evaluated with notes taken in Mendeley.

REFLECTION

The researcher has learnt various things and observed how to structure a research accurately and keep it organized and readable at the same time, with supporting evidence, real-world examples and facts to the stated arguments. Various methodologies were found to be utilized for different situations according to the respective research topics but ethical considerations and issues must be considered. The researcher had their ups and downs conducting the primary research, especially during the reasoning and logic where being meticulous is crucial as well as including examples to support arguments were all time consuming. Despite that, the researcher has gained valuable insights and the gist of how to conduct a proper research and data collection by conducting the critical review.
