TASKS

For this task, we were instructed to conduct data collection methodologies ranging from qualitative to quantitative methods and mixed-methods. Various tools or methods such as interviewing, online questionnaires were considered. My first idea came to mind with a focus group observation with an open discussion interview and an online questionnaire using a mixed-method methodology.

Week 10

  • Made the questionnaire and refined it to prepare to send out the questionnaire

  • Came up with some questions for the focus group observation and interview

  • considered the criterias and the flow of conducting the focus group observation and interview

Week 11
  • Sent out the questionnaire and conducted both of the focus groups
  • Observed and took notes for the focus groups and rewatched the recordings
  • Not all participants during the focus group consented to their faces being recorded

Week 12
  • Findings were all combined and a comparison analysis is conducted

FEEDBACK
WEEK 10

Specific Feedback

  • Make sure you elaborate on the justification on why you have to conduct the focus group for those who watched the owl house and those who do not watch the owl house

  • Ensure to consider that some people that do not have prior knowledge or background or exposure to art might not give much helpful insights

General Feedback :

Some questions may be too biased so try to avoid that and refine those questions that are biased

WEEK 11

Specific Feedback :

  • try to record since it would be much more sufficient to be able to rewatch the video to see if you have missed any details in the observation

  • one of the advantages of conducting a focus group is that participant’s answers within the focus group might be influenced by each other which could lead to having an open ended discussion but some might be dominant over the rest and might leave some participants quiet so keep that in consideration during the focus group and make sure all participants share their opinions

  • try avoid having 2 questions in one question

  • avoid bias in questions

  • try keep the question simple or the participants would be lost or be confused with the question for both focus groups and questionnaire

  • ensure the psychological and animation related questions for the focus group are open to both students

General Feedback

For focus group interview and observation ensure to get consent from the participants

WEEK 12

Specific Feedback :

  • Ensure to consider getting consent on the recording the focus group and consider ethical issues for it

General Feedback :

Ensure to spread the questionnaire throughout multiple platforms to get at least 80 responses

REFLECTION
This assignment had its ups and downs and was the toughest for the researcher. The researcher had to do research on past research papers and observe how they conduct a mixed-methodology of observing and interview as well in the form of a focus group. It was pretty tough to conduct the observation for the researcher as the researcher did not have any control over the reactions or responses made by the participants and some of them did not consent to being recorded. The online questionnaire itself took a ton of time to make the questions and spread them out as even though the form was spread throughout at least 5 social media platforms, it was still not reaching the required amount. The researcher has gained valuable insights on how not knowing the context behind something leads to people often depending on their own preferences and experiences to judge certain things, compared to those that know the context that has consistent collective votes. Many ethical issues had to be considered for both methodologies, especially the first one as it involves observing people’s faces and body language and the researcher has no control over whether they are willing to consent to it or not.
