REFLECTION

Throughout the course of this semester, the researcher has learnt and observed many things surrounding my specialization and the correlation between the psychological aspect and the technical aspects in animation. It has pushed the researcher to go beyond what is expected to be intricate with details observing and delving into people’s minds and thoughts when watching the animation where each person has their own thoughts according to their personal experiences which helped the researcher gain fascinating insights on the psychological approach towards animation.

The start of the assignment of making the ideation proposal, there were many areas of topics where the researcher wanted to research from as the scope of psychology and animation both intrigued me so it was a challenge having to pick a specific topic. At one point, the researcher was torn between several animated characters that the researcher wanted to focus my study on as each of them would open doors to various areas of themes and topics that intrigued me. In the end, my decision to go with the main character from The Owl House was due to the fact that The Owl House was known to break many boundaries and stereotypes in animation and explore various topics that other animations have barely touched on or are often overlooked.

Formulating my research objectives, questions and finding references were aided with Ms Hayati’s guidance along the way, clarifying confusions and concerns faced upon doing the assignment. Proceeding onto the second assignment where we are given the opportunity to gain some knowledge and further insights on how to enhance our research, by using critical thinking skills to review certain articles. This has given me an idea and the gist of how a research is often conducted along with its supporting evidence and suitable research methodologies. This also gave me valuable insights on balancing the contents of the analysis in a research to avoid being biased when conducting research methodologies and formulating arguments as well as ensuring the statements and arguments are viable with supporting evidence and real world examples.

Moving on to the third assignment, more obstacles and doubts came into mind as many things had to be considered throughout the process of coming up with the suitable research methodologies for the data collection. Based on the critical review the researcher did on some research articles, the researcher has found that most animation and psychological research topics that involve the audiences often use a mixed-methodology approach to obtain the most amount of information both in a qualitative and a quantitative aspect, conducting it on a specific group of participants to get more detailed insights on certain aspects as well as get a broad range of participant’s patterns on their preferences or emotions. Avoiding bias questions or analysis was another challenge as the scope of the researcher’s research was mainly surrounding negative emotions portrayed through animation but the researcher would have to consider those who take unpleasant scenes in animations lightly or see it in a positive aspect to avoid imbalance in the data collection. Getting more participants for both the survey and the interview was more of a struggle as there were various ethical issues to be considered.

All in all, these assignments have aided the researcher in further understanding and enhancing the researcher’s preparation in conducting research in the future and gained valuable insights on not only how to conduct a successful research but also opened my mind towards new topics that I have yet to explore in the area of the chosen specialization.
