INSTRUCTIONS

TASK

For this task, we are required to produce a 3D model of a character from a model sheet using polygon tools and techniques based on what we have learnt as well as providing the right material and texture to give its appearance. For the rendering, we are to provide three point lighting and use either cycles or eevee for the final output.

For the character I went for Cuphead.

2. Modeling Process
I started out with modeling the cup by using a cube and subdividing then using loop cuts to the top of the cup. Then I added the top layer of the cup and added a straw. For the straw, I used a cylinder and made it hollow, then bend it using loop cut and extrude and added creases to it to make it look realistic.

The arms were a bit time consuming to do as I had to try multiple methods to model it by creating a separate object then combining it into one mesh which didn't really work out as expected so I decided to try adjust the vertices then extrude from the mesh itself.

Then I modeled the legs by adding a cylinder then used the extrude tool along and added loop cuts to get the shape then mirrored it for the other leg.

The hands were a bit tedious to model since it took a lot of loop cuts and extruding to get the accurate shape of the hand. I also noticed its not shaped like a regular human hand but rather cartoony with the fingers being thicker and rounder.

The eyes and nose were made using cube then subdivided and loop cuts were added to get the desired shape.

For the mouth I used inset then adjusted the shape of the mouth by moving around the vertices. The tongue was made using cube and was subdivided and used loop cuts to shape it out and get the slit in the middle.

3. Colouring & Rendering Process
The straw was coloured by selecting the faces and assigning the colours to it. I also made the straw have a slightly glossy look by adjusting the roughness.

For the lighting it was suggested for me to add 3 point lighting and add a key rim light so this is me exploring and experimenting with the different lighting by adjusting the positions and the power of each light source.

The first one made the character look menacing and creepy which does not suit the character's personality and design so I decided to try several different approaches towards the lighting.

The overall model was rendered in Eevee as it was more suitable and recommended for this character.

FEEDBACK

Week 14
- Ensure to have three point lighting and include a rim light to highlight the top of the character
- Make sure to have a key light

REFLECTION

This project was enjoyable overall but it became a bit of a tedious challenge when it came to modeling the limbs especially the hands as we are not allowed to use sculpting for this assignment. I also learnt various methods on modeling to achieve the same model as some people would start modeling in low poly then only subdivide and shade smooth by the end of it while some people like me would rather subdivide first then only start modeling using the tools in edit mode.
