Final Project : Animatic
❥INSTRUCTIONS
❥TASK
For this assignment, we were tasked to create a 1 minute animatic, starting
with the thumbnail and the storyboard. I took inspiration from the animatics and animations I watched from project 1.
1. Thumbnail sketches
Fig 1.1 First attempt at storyboard
For this page, I was suggested to start off with the zoom out transition from
the bedroom scene with the main character to the over the shoulder shot from
Nyx's perspective.
I wanted to transition from them holding hands to a different location so I
made Reiko sit since he initially had a lower position below Nyx.
Fig 1.2 First page of Thumbnail
To capture the startled facial expression and reaction of Reiko at the park
scene, there would be a close-up shot from Nyx's perspective and Reiko's
perspective. I also added some parallels from the first act to the last.

3. Animatic
I then imported all the panels in After Effects and adjusted the duration of the panels according to the beat of the music.
I used the blur effect for the scenes in the dream to give it a surreal effect and made the panels move from left to right.
Fig 3.2 Reiko shocked waking up
To show how it was a happy memory of Reiko's in the dream, I made the colours of Reiko's scene contrast with the dream. I also added a slight camera shake and a blur to emphasize Reiko's shock.
Fig 3.3 Scenes of Reiko's daily life
I wanted to make as if Reiko's daily life is dull and boring to him having it repetitive and making sure that his surroundings are in a lighter shade which is contrast to Reiko's, reflecting his emotions.
Fig 3.4 Zoom out transition from room using scale
I adjusted the keyframes to play around with the speed of the same from one panel to another for the transition.
Fig 3.5 Second act of animatic
This scene use the scale tool to transition from Nyx and Reiko holding hands to them in the park right when the music escalates into major scales to signify a sense of happiness. These scenes also had mostly white hues instead of gray to show contrast.
I separated Reiko and Nyx on the background so they can move at different speeds separately as well as the sun and the moon.
Fig 3.7 Nyx feeding Reiko at the market
I added silhouettes of people walking across the scene as a transition to the next act which is Reiko and Nyx on top of the building flying a kite.

❥FEEDBACK
Week 12
- Use after effects to move the panels separately and use other effects.
- From inside the room to outside when Nyx first comes in shot, zoom out using the scale tool for transition.
- For the first page of the thumbnail on the 7th panel, make sure the holding hands is from Reiko's perspective from the bed.
❥REFLECTION
Doing this project was new to me as it was my first time doing an animatic. I admit that even though it was a tedious process thinking about which panels to draw separately beforehand and having to draw more than a hundred panels were also time consuming, but I had fun editing on after effects and was quite satisfied with the results. I also learnt some new tools and explored new effects.
