❥PART 1 — IDEA DEVELOPMENT
1. Biography
INTRODUCTION
I go by the name of Rachel Madeline and I’m currently 18 years old. My life took place in several countries which started from Jakarta, the city I was born. 4 years later I moved to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia because my parents had work to do here. 6/7 years later I moved to Surabaya to continue my 5th grade and high-school years. And here I am now back in Malaysia to continue my studies in Taylors University, taking Bachelor Degree of Creative Media in Design, aspiring to be a graphic designer.
PARAGRAPH 1 — IMPACT OF ART THROUGHOUT MY LIFE
Throughout my life, art has always played a significant role. As a child, I was told I tend to express myself and what I want to say through drawings. As I got older, I discovered arts and crafts and paper mache, then pursued art during high school which introduced me to various forms of art such as painting, sculptures, digital drawing and graphic design.
PARAGRAPH 2 — HOW DID I DEVELOP MY ART STYLE?
As I got further into art, I explored more of my art style and experimented on different styles of art during my high school years and found out that I was rather fond of surrealism art. Most of the art I did featured somewhat of a dream-like visual or an illusion of several objects combined as symbols which ends up being composed into something unrealistic and surrealistic, like something you’d see in a dream or a fantasy genre based narrative. I especially love using flowers and nature as a form of symbols in my art. My drawing style is usually expressed in a simple cartoony style which contrasts the context of my art since they usually feature something surrealistic and has an unexpected meaning or back story.
PARAGRAPH 3 — SUMMARY
My name is Rachel Madeline, I was born in Jakarta, Indonesia and grew up in Malaysia for 6 years then moved to Indonesia for High school and moved back to Malaysia for University. Im currently taking Bachelor of Design in Creative Media in Taylor’s University and my current age is 18. I have an interest in art since I was young and expressed my art through a surrealism style.
2. Statement about Work
What is the concept behind it?
My idea is to create a poster in a surrealism expression by using flowers and butterflies as a symbolism to express the contrast between my imagination and reality. I wanted to make a design of myself that expressed not only my imagination but also my perspective and way of thinking, where I used to always escape reality and is always lost in my own world of imagination. I was also always fond of nature and its symbolism, thus flowers and butterflies would play a part in portraying the message. The image of myself will be in monotone colours while in contrast, the elements portrayed outside of the glass will be in colours which conveys the concept that I am trapped in my own imaginative world as I view reality in black and white.
What is the message being put forth through the design?
Don’t let the world stop you from expressing yourself in the most imaginative and creative ways you could come up with or produce.
What is your motto/quote?
Imagination is the eye of the soul.

❥PART 2 — DESIGN DIRECTION
1. Sketches
Fig 1.1 First sketch idea
Fig 1.2 Second sketch idea
I wanted to go for a surrealism approach to express my imagination as
mentioned in part 1 in my idea development so I came up with 2 of these
sketches, although I did end up going with something similar to the second
sketch idea with a mix of some ideas I've gotten from the inspiration I
found on Pinterest from part 1.
I wasn't really fond of the first draft as it seemed too generic so I
decided to go with the second draft and improve that further.

Fig 2.11 "Head in Euphoria" Final Project for Self Titled
This composition features a pair of hands holding up a part of my head which contains a flower waterfall and a field of flowers in colours contrasting the image of myself in monotone colours, portraying a symbolism of my imagination bringing a sense of euphoria into my life.
❥PART 3 — ANIMATION
First, I had to animate the butterfly separately from the other
elements as I wanted the animation of the butterfly to be flying
across the screen.

After animating the butterfly itself, I moved on to animating the
poster itself and added some fog and particle effects to enhance
the animation.

❥REFLECTION
This project overall was rather enjoyable as I got to express myself in a way that I never tried which is through the media of photoshop and after effects. I was always used to using traditional medias such as painting, drawing, arts and crafts so this is definitely new to me. It was a bit of a challenge trying to animate in after effects as I wasn't really familiar with the program and I came across some problems along the way due to the RAM and the cache but eventually I got some assistance and managed to complete the animation.
