INSTRUCTIONS

TASK

TASK 2A — WALK CYCLE ANIMATION

For this task, we are to animate the walk cycle in 3's and 24fps, following the animator's survival kit's guide book.

  1. Study vanilla walk cycle that includes poses and timing from the book of Animator’s Survival Kit as a reference as these:

    1. Contact pose (3 frames)

    2. Down pose (3 frames)

    3. Pass pose (3 frames)

    4. Up pose (3 frames)

  2. We are to animate the rough animation and the tie down animation

During the lecture, we got to try out the rough animation ourselves so I tried following the guide but did everything on ones and included the in-betweens.

Fig 1.3 Attempt on walk cycle

To get a better gist of how the walk cycle should be animated in 3s, I decided to look up for some videos on youtube as a source of guidance.

I then drew the rough animation according to the guide and made sure it was drawn on 3s.

After doing the rough, I started working on the Tie down animation.

Below is my first attempt for the walk cycle.

After receiving some feedback, I fixed the shoulder positions and moved the arm then adjusted the arm lengths to keep them consistent.

Fig 1.8 Arm placement mistake

Other than that, the left arm also wasn't moving towards the right direction on the 5th frame and the foot positions were not aligned well on the contact frame so I fixed it. The arm was also kind of jerky due to the shoulder placements.

TASK 2B — JUMP ANIMATION

The second task for this project was to animate the jump animation of our character and include the rough and the tie down compiled.

After the first attempt, I fixed the arm swinging at the beginning and adjusted some of the inbetweens for the landing part.

FEEDBACK

Week 9
- The landing seemed a bit stiff, could be further worked on
- The arm movement when standing back up should follow the body
- Arm swing at the beginning needs to have shoulder be a pivot and not move its position.

REFLECTION

These projects finally give me the opportunity to bring my character to life by animating them walking and jumping. The process of this project has been a series of trial and error and a tedious process of retrying repeatedly nonetheless, it was an enjoyable process doing something exciting yet foreign to me.
