Task 3 — Testing & Refinement

INSTRUCTIONS

TASK

In this task, our group is required to make a low-cost, scaled-down prototypes of the product or its specific features to explore and test solutions identified in earlier tasks. This task would enable us to find solutions for each problem we have by implementing them in prototypes then evaluating them based on the user's feedback which would aid us in understanding our product's limitations and how users might interact with it.

A. PACKAGING
After the previous presentation, we came up with sketches that may suit the wants of the clients more which is their demand for Scandinavian themed patterns integrated in the packaging. Me and Agnes focused on the graphic design aspect and the packaging so I will be describing our process.

Fig 1.2 Apple Sketches (done by agnes)

Fig 1.3 Rose Sketches (done by agnes)

After getting feedback for this, we came to a conclusion that the design had too many things going on and it is not cohesive with their brand and the logo, so I decided to come up with alternative sketches for the exterior and make it cohesive with the initial sketches from Task 2 for the interior designs.

This time, I was thinking of reusing the same elements throughout the 3 packagings to keep it consistent but have their own respective colour palettes and for the digitizing part, I suggested that we trace out the elements without lineart.

Once I was done with the sketches, we started with the digitization process.

PACKAGING DIGITIZATION PROCESS
1. APPLE
This is the digitization for the apple packaging done on Illustrator.

Once we discussed the design as a group and compared it with the rose design we decided that this had too many patterns and motifs for a minimalistic but scandinivian design and might not reach up to the client's standards. Some of the colours like the pink one stood out a bit too much compared to the rest of the colours thus having further refinements be crucial to proceed onto the mockup stages.

Fig 2.4 After refinement

After working on the exterior and finalizing the design for it, I decided to continue on the interior digitization by just copy pasting some of the elements used in the exterior and arranging them in a pattern.

2. ROSE
For the rose, I also did the same process and went onto illustrator to trace it directly from the sketch and since all of us were mostly fond of the design for the rose, I decided to use it as a base design to take inspiration for the other two packagings.

I decided to make further adjustments to the colours before showing it to our clients and adjusted it with the apple's colour palette as well to make it more cohesive.

Once I was done with the exterior, I moved on to the interior by copy pasting some of the elements from the exterior and making it a pattern for the interior which is the same method I used for the apple interior, thus keeping the design consistent.

3. BABYPOWDER
For babypowder, my initial sketch in figure 1.4 didn't really get approved by my group mates since it was too oblivious and with the amount of baby elements such as the baby bottle and the pacifier and when Ben digitized it, we weren't really fond of the outcome so I asked Agnes for ideas and she came up with a sketch and helped digitized it.

The main icon for the babypowder was replaced to a cloud and some of the elements were replaced to daisies to resemble a baby.

These below are some of the digitization that were done based on the sketch and some colour exploration.

I decided to make further refinements on the colour palette for the packaging.

PACKAGING MOCKUPS
After that I passed on the raw files to Joan to do blender mockups and animations of the tissues for the social media, and passed it to Ben for the PNG mockups which were suggested by the clients themselves.

B. LOGO
I continued the logo from where Sim left off based on the feedback given from the clients and the previous task and just continued to digitize it using different colours, creating more alternatives and variations such as the secondary logo and the submark.

Fig 3.3 Monochrome logo variations

The coloured logo variations are based on the colour palette that we have for the brand.

I also added some graphical elements and patterns for everyone else to incorporate in social media or website.

C. WEBSITE
Based on the previous feedback that was given to us last task, we were told that the website being monochrome and minimalistic with many lines isn't really cohesive with the art direction and the feel of the overall brand, thus Vincent tried to incorporate more elements and vibrant patterns into the design.

Moving onto the final slides, we compiled all of them in canva slides and gathered a to do list for everyone to complete and upload in the slides. I created the slides for them to compile their work into and me and Vincent made a to do list for everyone to avoid all the confusion and miscommunication since that seemed to become a common reoccurring concern in our group.

FEEDBACK

Week 6

  • Using too many shapes and pictures, like squares, has made the layout feel cluttered and disrupted its flow.
  • The lack of consistent brand elements is also causing inconsistency.
  • For the packaging, reducing patterns and elements can create a cleaner, more Scandinavian-inspired design.

Week 7

  • Overusing lines as design elements should be reconsidered; mixing them with patterns could make the brand feel more playful.
  • The font for the logo and website needs reviewing—headings (especially in the hero section) and the logo are clashing.
  • Focus on building a solid brand identity first. The logo font doesn’t have to be used for website headings and titles.
  • Progress has been delayed due to communication gaps and other behind-the-scenes issues.
  • The mascot’s digital version still needs work; sharp edges on the corners should be refined.
  • The current placement of the mascot and brand name feels overthought. Experiment with different layouts to find the best arrangement.

Week 9

Typography

  • Product information is missing, and fonts are inconsistent. Decide on a cohesive set of typefaces to use across the project since multiple different fonts are used on different assets.

Website

  • The impact page feels disconnected because of the shapes and colors.
  • Avoid using generic shapes; instead, draw from the logo’s design elements to create a more cohesive and branded look.

REFLECTION

Overall it was a really enjoyable process and I really enjoyed the part where I got to design the packaging and also digitize them and also got carried away with designing the elements as well. Though I did have some concerns for my group due to the fact that I believed we lacked in communication and we often have miscommunications but fortunately we were able to address such concerns by listing out to do lists and feedbacks recieved from clients and how to move forward from them.
