❥REFLECTION
Experiences
Through the journey of this first semester in typography, I've learnt a ton
starting from type expressions to designing our very own font. I have to
admit, it wasn't the easiest journey and there were many ups and downs
during the process, especially during the start of the semester, everything
seemed so foreign to me due of my lack of exposure towards typography and
Illustrator. As more time passes by, I got the gist of designing fonts using
various programs such as Illustrator and Indesign as well as paying
attention to the intricate details and rules of typography while designing
which in turn, enhanced my observational skills.
Observations
Designing in typography requires delicacy and an eye for intricate details
of the letters. They might look equal in a glimpse of an eye but when you
look closely, you would notice small variations of the details in the
characteristics of the letters. Studying typography has definitely also
altered my perspective and sensibility towards design, as I would observe my
surroundings and would often get caught up in their designs and tend to
notice the small details in their typography and managed to differentiate
them between sans serif and serif.
Findings
In typography, I've noticed that there are an extensive amount of
rules and guides to follow in typography, which in my opinion, limits
my creativity and freedom from designing what I want. As a person who enjoys
art for its freedom and imagination, I could not simply just spontaneously
design with whatever comes up in my mind on an empty document, as there are
a ton of rules that must be followed and paid close attention to when
designing a typeface, type format or a font.
